The region of Goriška is situated in the north-west of Slovenia, close to the Italian border. It comprises the municipalities of Ajdovščina, Bovec, Brda, Cerkno, Idrija, Kanal ob Soči, Kobarid, Miren – Kostanjevica, Nova Gorica, Renče – Vogrsko, Šempeter – Vrtojba, Tolmin and Vipava. The main town of Nova Gorica has grown after the World War II as a Yougoslav substitute town for Gorica/Gorizia which remained on the Italian side of the border.
The region of Goriška lies at the crossroads of the Mediterranean, Alpine and Central Europe and on the contact of Roman, Slavic and Germanic linguistic groups. This position has influenced the diverse landscape, from the high peaks of the Alps with their harsh climate in the north to the Mediterranean mild climate in the south, as well as local cultural heritage, within which the sacral architecture and the equipment of churches have an important role.
